Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has arrested a Russian citizen on suspicion of spying for New Zealand’s Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS). The individual, born in 1971 and residing in Khabarovsk in Russia’s far east, has been placed in custody.
According to the FSB, the man “proactively established” contact with the NZSIS and transmitted information that could jeopardize the security of the Russian Federation. The agency claims he acted out of “selfish motives” and followed instructions from a foreign intelligence service, utilizing foreign email services and instant messengers. A criminal case has been opened under Article 275 of the Russian Criminal Code for treason, which carries penalties of up to life imprisonment.
New Zealand’s intelligence leadership has declined to comment on the matter. Intelligence Minister Chris Penk stated that these issues are “operational in nature” and that officials typically refrain from commenting on them. The NZSIS also noted that Russian media outlets “are often not the most reliable source of accurate reporting.”
