Belgian authorities have arrested a woman who was interning at NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Mons, Belgium, on suspicion of espionage. The woman, a Canadian citizen of Chinese origin, was detained on Friday, and the Belgian Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office announced the arrest on Saturday.
Prosecutors suspect that she was spying for a third country and was a member of a criminal organization. Investigators conducted searches at both her home and her workplace at SHAPE. The investigation began when SHAPE’s own security services flagged her conduct and reported their concerns to Belgian military intelligence, which subsequently referred the matter to federal prosecutors.
SHAPE is NATO’s primary military command in Europe, led by the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, and plays a central role in the alliance’s operational planning. A SHAPE spokesperson stated that there is no indication that NATO’s or SHAPE’s operational readiness, command and control arrangements, or ongoing tasks have been affected, confirming that the headquarters continues to operate normally.
Authorities have provided few additional details about the case. They have not publicly identified the woman or disclosed the country for which she allegedly spied. This arrest comes amid heightened concerns across Europe regarding foreign intelligence activities targeting NATO institutions and member states.
