Gardaí have charged two individuals following the interception of a suspected New IRA bomb near the Irish border. A car was stopped on the main Dublin to Derry road near Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan. During a search, officers discovered a bag on the rear seat containing Semtex, a military-grade explosive, along with a detonator.
Isobella Perrie Sullivan, 25, of Abbeylands Park, Clane, Co. Kildare, a trainee barrister, was charged with possession of explosives at a special sitting of Trim District Court. At Cavan District Court, Judge Raymond Finnegan granted her bail on a €15,000 independent surety. Conditions of her bail include surrendering her passport, adhering to a nightly curfew, signing in daily at Naas Garda station, and having no contact with anyone associated with Saoradh or the New IRA.
A second accused, Simon O’Donovan, 44, of Sperrin Road, Dublin 12, was charged with possession of an explosive substance at a Dublin address. He was refused bail at a late-night sitting of the non-jury Special Criminal Court.

So What
Semtex is not improvised. It is factory made military explosive, so its presence almost certainly points to a supply chain that needs tracing back to source. Both cases routing through the Special Criminal Court, Ireland’s non-jury terrorism court, signals the state is treating this as organised New IRA activity, not the act of a lone individual.
The most likely read is dissident republican logistics moving material toward the border. A more speculative angle is external supply, a hostile state such as Russia or Iran arming willing hands to reignite the conflict, though there is no evidence for that here and it stays unlikely. On balance this looks like persistent dissident activity, not a sign of renewed conflict in Northern Ireland.
