Information
Iranian gunboats linked to the Revolutionary Guard fired on a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, around 20 nautical miles northeast of Oman. The UK Maritime Trade Operations center reported that the firing came without any prior radio warning, according to the tanker’s captain. The vessel and its crew were reported safe. The incident happened shortly after Iran appeared to reverse a decision to reopen the strait, though several ships had already passed through during the brief window it was open.
Iran’s deputy foreign minister, Saeed Khatibzadeh, told reporters on Saturday that no date has been set for the next round of US-Iran peace talks, which are being brokered by Pakistan. Speaking at a diplomatic forum in Antalya, Turkey, he said both sides are still working to agree on a framework before any meeting can be scheduled. He added that Iran does not want to enter talks that are likely to fail, as this could be used as a reason for further escalation. He also stressed that Iran would not accept being treated as an exception to international law in any negotiations.

So What
While this is a significant setback, it is likely that the agreement can still be saved if the US is willing to end its blockade. However, the US may feel slighted by the attack and view it as an embarrassment, which could lead to escalation, and the challenging element here is knowing how the Trump administration will react. Regardless of the US response, this incident will have significant effects on ship insurance, which could lead to notable delays in the region.
