Information
Romanian authorities have arrested six individuals accused of plotting a coup, alleging they collaborated with “agents of a foreign power” in both Romania and Russia. The group reportedly planned to form a paramilitary militia, overthrow the government, withdraw Romania from NATO, and introduce a new constitution. Two suspects allegedly traveled to Moscow in January, where they sought support from Russian officials. Among those arrested is 101-year-old retired major general Radu Theodoru, a Holocaust denier who has praised Romania’s fascist World War II regime and criticised the current government.
The arrests come amid rising tensions between Romania and Russia, following the expulsion of two Russian officials — the Russian military attache and his deputy — for allegedly working with far-right presidential candidate Călin Georgescu. Georgescu, who won the first round of presidential elections in November before the results were annulled due to Russian interference claims, is now under investigation for inciting actions against the constitutional order. He has denied any ties to Russia, despite growing concerns about foreign influence in Romania’s political landscape.

So what
Although there is very limited information available, it is not surprising that more individuals were identified in these investigations into Russian influence. While these individuals may have posed a threat to specific people — as their planned coup could have potentially led to violence — it is highly unlikely that the coup would have been successful. This situation indicates that Russia has likely been very active in operations aimed at destabilizing Romania and possibly other states within the EU.
