Russia and Ukraine exchanged major overnight drone and missile attacks on Tuesday amid escalating tensions in the war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia launched more than 500 drones and over 20 missiles targeting several regions across Ukraine, injuring more than two dozen civilians, including children. Ukrainian officials reported four deaths in the Chernihiv and Sumy regions, while attacks also damaged infrastructure in Izmail and struck Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolaiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv, where rescue efforts continued after a drone strike caused building collapses.
At the same time, Russian authorities said Ukrainian drones targeted Moscow, Kursk, Rostov, and Yaroslavl, with several drones intercepted near the capital. Officials in Kursk reported one death and two injuries, while an industrial site in Yaroslavl caught fire after a drone attack. The intensified exchanges occurred as diplomatic efforts to end the war remain stalled and as Russia launched a three-day nationwide nuclear weapons exercise involving thousands of troops. The drills, announced by Russia’s defense ministry, come ahead of President Vladimir Putin’s upcoming visit to China and amid Ukraine’s increasing use of drone strikes.

Both governments seek to project strength domestically and signal resilience to each other. For President Putin, recent military messaging and nuclear drills are meant to bolster his image after criticism surrounding the May 9 Victory Day parade. While these nuclear exercises aim to intimidate and show readiness, the actual use of a nuclear weapon by Moscow remains highly unlikely due to severe military, political, and international repercussions.
