Iran is reportedly tightening its control over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil shipping route between Iran and Oman, through a new system of island checkpoints, inspections, and diplomatic clearances overseen by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. According to Reuters, vessels may now face affiliation checks for ties to the United States or Israel, delays, inspections, and in some cases alleged transit fees before being allowed to pass. Ships linked to countries with closer relations to Tehran, such as Russia and China, have reportedly encountered fewer obstacles. The move comes after the recent conflict involving Iran disrupted traffic through the strait, which normally handles a large share of the world’s oil exports.
The restrictions have already affected global energy markets, sharply reducing daily vessel traffic through Hormuz and contributing to rising energy prices. Reuters reported that only about 10 ships per day are currently transiting the strait, compared with 125–140 before the conflict. The U.S. has warned shipping companies that making payments to Iran for passage could trigger sanctions, while President Donald Trump publicly urged Iran not to impose transit charges. In response to the growing uncertainty, Gulf countries are accelerating projects to bypass the strait, including a new UAE oil pipeline expected to begin operating in 2027.

If Iran gains control over the Strait of Hormuz, it would be a major strategic setback for the U.S. and President Trump, indicating a decline in American influence in the Gulf. Gulf states might increasingly seek security and economic support from China, marking a shift away from relying on Washington.The U.S. could apply pressure through naval blockades and military presence, but maintaining this long-term would be costly and politically challenging. In contrast, Iran’s geographic advantage enables it to adopt a strategy of endurance and attrition while waiting for U.S. resolve and regional support to wane.
