US Central Command struck targets across southern and western Iran on Tuesday, hitting Shiraz, Konarak, Chabahar, Khorramabad and Abdanan. CENTCOM said it targeted military command centres, maritime capabilities, missile and drone launch sites, and air defence systems. An Iranian health ministry official reported 50 civilians killed and 500 wounded. The strikes followed President Trump’s warning that Tehran would pay for the deaths of American soldiers, after the US military death toll reportedly rose to 17 over the weekend.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they retaliated against US-linked targets in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan. In Bahrain, the Guards said they hit infrastructure belonging to US tech company Amazon, and Iranian state media reported strikes on accommodation used by US personnel at Sheikh Isa Air Base. Tehran called this retaliation for a US strike on the construction site of the planned Darkhovin nuclear power plant. In Kuwait, Iranian forces reportedly hit power generation and water desalination plants, taking several units out of service. Jordan said it intercepted five Iranian drones.
A tanker was struck by a projectile in the Strait of Hormuz and its crew evacuated. The Revolutionary Guards reported two tankers on fire after explosions in the strait. Oil prices rose nearly 2 percent. The escalation came a day after Yemen’s Houthis announced a naval blockade of Saudi Arabia. Tehran has reportedly received a ceasefire proposal from mediators.

So What
Iran is unlikely to be trying to defeat US forces directly. Hitting Amazon infrastructure, power plants and desalination units is not a military win, it is a bill sent to the host government. The likely aim is to make hosting American forces unbearable for Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan, and to fracture the basing network US operations in the Gulf depend on. It is possible this backfires and hardens Gulf alignment with Washington. But with a ceasefire proposal on the table, the more likely read is that Tehran is buying leverage before talks.
