Information
The European Parliament was poised for a significant vote on comprehensive reforms to the European Union’s migration and asylum policies, aiming to introduce the new EU Asylum and Migration Pact. This initiative seeks to expedite the dismissal of unfounded asylum applications and distribute the responsibility for processing legitimate requests more equitably among EU member states. The decision to move forward with the ten-law package comes after prolonged contention among the EU’s conservative and liberal factions, and between northern and southern countries, especially in light of asylum applications hitting a seven-year peak in 2023. Although the European Parliament’s leading political groups have shown support for the reforms, various migrant charities and NGOs have raised concerns about potential human rights violations.
The proposed changes include a rapid processing system for migrants entering the EU without authorization, encompassing identity, health, and security screenings within a week, along with the differentiation of migrants for either accelerated or standard asylum procedures or immediate repatriation. Special provisions are made for children, and asylum seekers from countries with a high rejection rate are to be quickly processed in detention centers near the EU borders, sparking debate over the potential for systematic detention and human rights infringements. Additionally, the reform plans to adjust the “Dublin III” mechanism, which has traditionally placed a disproportionate burden on southern EU countries by mandating the country of first arrival to process asylum applications.

Assessment
Migration has been a significant point of contention within the EU for several years now. It appears likely that countries such as Germany and France, who originally wanted more openness in the bloc, have changed their tune in the face of mounting pressure. The EU is likely set to make the route to legal asylum more difficult; sadly, further investment is necessary to change the current issue of illegal migration.
