China and Russia agree to boost ties in opposition to West

Information

During a meeting between China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, a commitment to “strengthen strategic cooperation” between Beijing and Moscow was reiterated, signalling a continuation of the close diplomatic ties that have been developing since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. This encounter, which took place over a two-day visit by Lavrov to China, highlighted both countries’ intention to support each other in the face of what they perceive as unfair sanctions and policies from Western nations, particularly the United States. Lavrov criticized the West for its sanctions against Russia and the emerging restrictive measures against China, particularly concerning access to key US-made technologies.

The burgeoning partnership between China and Russia has elicited concern from Western nations, urging China to use its influence on Russia to halt the conflict in Ukraine. The US, in particular, has been vocal about its apprehensions, with Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warning of consequences should China provide support to Russia’s war efforts. Despite these pressures, Lavrov and Wang expressed unwavering support for the leadership in their respective countries, lauding the achievements under President Xi Jinping’s leadership in China and President Vladimir Putin’s leadership in Russia. The dialogues and mutual commendations underscore the “no limits” partnership ethos that both countries have adopted, emphasizing their collective opposition to what they view as hegemonism and a monopoly of international affairs by a select few nations.

Assessment

While unsurprising, this will likely see an increase in open support for Russia’s war in Ukraine, something that has been limited so far. It is possible this is due to recent Russian success, which gave China the confidence that they could succeed in the conflict. Additionally, Russian success could give China confidence in a conflict against Taiwan.
