British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s recent discussions with President Trump at the White House focused on securing a commitment to Ukraine’s security and exploring possibilities for a peaceful resolution to the conflict with Russia. Starmer emphasized the UK’s willingness to actively support Ukraine, proposing that Britain could contribute troops to an international coalition aimed at enforcing peace following any ceasefire agreement. However, this support was contingent on the United States providing a “backstop” of intelligence, logistics, and air power.
Despite Starmer’s push for a robust allied military presence, President Trump was non-committal about deploying U.S. forces. He seemed to rely on the strategic implications of his proposed minerals deal with Ukraine and the presence of American workers there as sufficient deterrents against further Russian aggression. Trump expressed a degree of confidence in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s reliability in adhering to agreements, suggesting that these measures would prevent further conflict. Additionally, Starmer extended an invitation from King Charles III to Trump for a second state visit to the UK, which Trump accepted, indicating ongoing diplomatic engagements between the two nations.

Starmer appears to have done a good job in Washington, particularly due to his numerous historical anti-Trump statements, which Trump doesn’t normally move past. It is likely that Trump is being pragmatic in this relationship, ensuring that he doesn’t totally isolate the US, while also ensuring they can maintain their bases in the UK. Though Trump is playing hardball on the deployment of the US military in Europe, it is unlikely that he would leave the security of US interests in Ukraine solely on Europe. It seems like the US wants to keep the UK close, even while being tough on other partners.
