US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned on Tuesday, following significant criticism for the agency’s failure to prevent an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Cheatle’s resignation came a day after a contentious congressional hearing where she admitted that the security lapse at the July 13 Republican campaign rally in Pennsylvania was one of the agency’s most significant operational failures in decades. Despite taking full responsibility, Cheatle’s vague responses, citing ongoing investigations, frustrated lawmakers from both parties who had called for her resignation. The bipartisan dissatisfaction was echoed by Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, who stated that her resignation was overdue and a necessary step.
The incident at the rally involved a 20-year-old shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, who managed to get within 135 meters of the stage and opened fire with an AR-style assault rifle. Trump was grazed in the ear, one rally attendee was killed, and two others were seriously wounded before a Secret Service sniper neutralized the shooter within 30 seconds. The shooter was found to have acted alone, with no clear ideological or political motives identified. The failure was particularly egregious given the heightened security due to prior threats against Trump, including from Iran. Cheatle, who had a 27-year career with the Secret Service before a brief stint in the private sector, was appointed by President Biden in 2022.

At the end of the day, she is responsible for the failures of the Secret Service, and it is likely that her resignation was demanded. It is also likely that the Secret Service will be going through some serious internal investigations to understand what led to the decisions that day. All of this will be over shadowed by the upcoming election and the increased security requirements that will need to be implemented.
