Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said he is “not worried” by reports that the United States is considering punishing Spain for refusing to support American military operations in the war with Iran. Reuters cited a US official who said an internal Pentagon email discussed possible measures against NATO allies seen as uncooperative, including suspending Spain from NATO. Spain, along with Italy and France, reportedly denied US aircraft access to bases and airspace for strikes on Iran, and Sánchez criticized the US-Israeli attack on Tehran as violating international law. He defended Spain’s stance, saying the country remains a reliable NATO member that cooperates with allies within the bounds of international legality.
The report has raised doubts because NATO has no formal mechanism to suspend or expel members, and several European leaders rejected the idea. German officials said Spain’s membership is not in question, while Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni urged NATO unity. President Donald Trump has criticized allies for not backing the war effort and for failing to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The Pentagon email reportedly did not propose leaving NATO, but aimed to pressure European allies. It also suggested reviewing US support for Britain’s claim to the Falkland Islands after the UK initially limited use of its bases, prompting Britain to reaffirm its sovereignty over the territory.

Meanwhile, Russia’s focus on the war in Ukraine limits its ability to exploit NATO tensions or pose a broader conventional threat.
