Information
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that for the first time in the war, a Russian position was captured using only unmanned platforms, ground robotic systems and drones, with no Ukrainian infantry involved and no losses on their side. The occupiers surrendered during the operation.
Ukraine has been increasing its use of ground robotic systems to carry out assault operations and recover wounded troops from dangerous areas. In the first three months of 2026, these systems completed more than 22,000 missions on the front line. As Zelenskyy put it, lives were saved more than 22,000 times when a robot went into the most dangerous areas instead of a soldier.

So What
While this may seem inconsequential on the surface, it likely has significant repercussions for the future of warfare. Up until now, a fundamental principle of warfare required soldiers to move forward to seize and hold ground, but drones and ground robotic systems are now challenging that principle. It is highly likely this will be seen more and more going forward, with Russia looking to mimic the tactics and western nations studying them closely for future conflicts.
