Britain has announced a future defensive mission to help secure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, supported by £115 million in new funding for autonomous mine-hunting and counter-drone technology. During a virtual summit involving defence ministers from more than 40 nations participating in the multinational military mission, the UK reaffirmed its leadership role and outlined its planned contributions. These include advanced autonomous mine-hunting systems, the Royal Navy’s “Beehive” platform with high-speed Kraken drone boats, Typhoon fighter jets for air patrols, mine-clearance specialists, and the deployment of HMS Dragon, equipped with the Sea Viper air defence and counter-drone system. The initiative reflects the Royal Navy’s transition toward a more technologically advanced “Hybrid Navy.”
Defence Secretary John Healey said the mission is intended to protect international shipping, strengthen confidence in trade routes, and reduce the wider economic impact of regional conflict. HMS Dragon is already heading to the Middle East after additional preparation and systems calibration, while RFA Lyme Bay is being upgraded to operate as a mothership for autonomous systems if needed. These measures build on the UK’s existing regional presence of more than 1,000 personnel, including fast jet squadrons and counter-drone teams. The multinational operation is described as strictly defensive and focused on safeguarding one of the world’s most important trade corridors, through which roughly one-fifth of global oil supplies pass.

The mission aims to bolster relations with the U.S. while showcasing military credibility both domestically and internationally, following significant criticism. However, securing shipping in the Strait of Hormuz demands a larger multinational effort than the UK can manage alone. Still, the deployment is a positive step, enhancing coalition deterrence and possibly encouraging Iran to pursue diplomatic negotiations.
