Turkey’s Demiral banned for ‘wolf’ gesture

Information

UEFA has issued a two-match ban to Turkish player Merih Demiral for his controversial political gesture during a match, wherein he used his fingers to make a wolf’s head shape, a symbol associated with the Turkish far right. This incident occurred after he scored his second goal in Turkey’s 2-1 win over Austria. UEFA penalised Demiral for breaching several conduct guidelines, including the misuse of sports events for non-sporting expressions and tarnishing the sport’s reputation. Consequently, Demiral will be absent from Turkey’s upcoming game against the Netherlands and a possible semi-final, should Turkey advance.

Demiral’s actions’ repercussions have extended beyond sports, sparking a diplomatic controversy, particularly with Germany. Turkish authorities have responded strongly, summoning the German ambassador and criticising the German response as xenophobic. Meanwhile, German officials have openly criticised the gesture, associating it with right-wing extremism and declaring such symbols unwelcome in sports settings. Turkish officials, including the Vice President and spokespeople from President Erdogan’s party, have defended Demiral, asserting the political neutrality of his actions and challenging the imposition of political interpretations on football. The incident highlights ongoing tensions regarding the interpretation and acceptance of political gestures in international sports.

So what

It is possible this ban could have a significant effect on the country’s performance in the Euros, and while hard to accept for the country’s supporters, it is likely that this is the only way to limit the amount of politics that gets into football. Although it is unlikely to stop political gestures such as this, it is possible that a ban leading to a significant disruption could discourage players in the future as the risk of letting their nation down may outway their desire to make political gestures.
