Russian Hawks Push Putin to Drop US Peace Talks

Russian hardliners are intensifying pressure on President Vladimir Putin to abandon U.S.-mediated peace talks and escalate the war in Ukraine, according to Reuters. The calls have sharpened following a series of Ukrainian drone strikes this month targeting Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Crimea, including an attack that set a Moscow oil refinery on fire and what Russia described as two strikes on civilian passenger buses.

Nationalist voices, including tycoon Konstantin Malofeyev and blogger Yuri Baranchik, have demanded strikes on Kyiv’s government quarter, the destruction of major Ukrainian cities, and even the use of tactical nuclear weapons. Some commentators are urging Moscow to model its approach on Iran’s posture toward Washington, framing confrontation as more effective than diplomacy. Three senior Russian government officials said this week that U.S.-brokered talks have gone nowhere, accusing Washington of failing to follow through on peace proposals made at last year’s Putin-Trump Alaska summit.

Putin has so far resisted these demands. He told military academy graduates on Tuesday that Russia is close to seizing Kostyantynivka in eastern Ukraine and expressed confidence that European political forces hostile to Russia would eventually be replaced by more accommodating ones.

So What
The hawkish rhetoric in Russia should not be seen as a definitive sign of imminent escalation, as nationalist commentary often surpasses Kremlin action during the war. A notable development is the public acknowledgment by senior Russian officials that U.S.-brokered talks have stalled, likely serving as either justification for ongoing military operations or a tactic to extract concessions from Washington. Comparisons to Iran suggest a belief among some Russian nationalists that confrontation yields better results. The most probable near-term scenario involves continued military pressure in the Donbas and selective air campaign escalation, while preserving some diplomatic channels. A formal distancing from the Alaska summit framework would indicate a genuine escalation.
