Information
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has called for a “limitless” expansion of his country’s nuclear arsenal, emphasizing the need to counter perceived threats from the US and its allies. Speaking to military leaders, Kim urged the completion of war preparations and criticized the US’s evolving military strategies, particularly its nuclear cooperation with South Korea and closer ties with Japan, which he labelled an “Asian NATO.” He reiterated his long-standing position that North Korea’s weapons development is a response to US-led military alliances in the region, describing them as reckless provocations. In September, Kim pledged to exponentially expand his nuclear capabilities in reaction to these developments, highlighting his aggressive stance amidst escalating regional tensions.
Kim also condemned US support for Ukraine in its war with Russia, alleging that Washington was exploiting Ukraine to extend its influence. This came in the context of North Korea’s growing military alliance with Russia, which was recently formalized in a pact. Pyongyang has reportedly sent around 10,000 troops to Russia, some of whom are believed to be fighting near the Ukrainian border. This deployment has drawn international criticism, further straining relations with the US and its allies. Kim’s speech underscores North Korea’s intent to bolster its military capabilities and deepen its alignment with Russia, reflecting a hardening stance against perceived Western aggression.

So what
It is highly likely that this rhetoric is part of the country’s justification for sending troops to Ukraine. While it is likely that this exchange is partly for money and technology, it also gives North Korean troops much-needed (from their perspective) experience in combat. However, it is possible that the country’s leadership will not be pleased if their troops are destroyed in mass, likely leading to continued escalation.
