Information
A NATO airbase in Geilenkirchen, western Germany, has raised its security to level Charlie, the second-highest level, due to intelligence reports suggesting a potential threat. This elevated security status indicates a high likelihood of a terrorist incident against NATO, as per the alliance’s definitions. Non-essential personnel have been sent home, though operations continue as planned, with the base emphasizing the safety of its staff as a top priority.
This is the second recent instance of heightened security at a NATO base in Germany, following a similar alert last week when a military base in Cologne was sealed off to investigate suspected sabotage of water supplies. NATO has previously warned of threats from Russia, including sabotage and cyberattacks, with Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg noting an increase in activity from Russian intelligence, suggesting an evolving pattern of potential threats.

So what
While no further have currently been released on the specific threat, it is highly unlikely that it came due to a direct threat from Russia. However, it is possible that there was a threat of a terrorist attack, particularly following recent news headlines related to IS. Yet, it is more likely that this was part of another grey zone-style plot by a Russian agent or criminal group acting on behalf of Russian Intelligence. Even though we may never know the reason, it is clear that European Intelligence is currently working overtime to identify and disrupt plots against military and civilian targets.
