Israel fires on southern Lebanon, claims ceasefire was breached

Information

Israel has accused Hezbollah of violating a ceasefire in southern Lebanon by engaging in actions near the border. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated it had fired on Hezbollah fighters, including some in vehicles, and mistakenly launched a missile at what it identified as a “suspicious aircraft.” Separately, Lebanese media reported that Israeli forces targeted the southern towns of Markaba, Wazzani, and Kfar Shuba, injuring two civilians. These incidents highlight tensions despite the ceasefire agreement, which requires Hezbollah fighters to retreat beyond the Litani River, roughly 30 kilometres north of the Israeli border.

The truce, which began Wednesday, also mandates a phased Israeli troop withdrawal within 60 days. Lebanese authorities have advised residents in border areas to remain away until the withdrawal is complete. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has emphasised that Israel reserves the right to respond to any violations by Hezbollah. These developments raise questions about the durability of the agreement and the potential for further escalation in the region.

So what

This situation is not surprising. As mentioned yesterday, it’s likely that certain elements within Hezbollah may attempt to provoke tensions and undermine the agreement. Ultimately, as long as the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) can effectively coordinate with the Lebanese Army and UN troops, there is a chance that the ceasefire could hold. However, there have been reports of Hezbollah moving large missiles back to the southern region, which poses a significant risk to the stability of the ceasefire.
