Estonians prepare to defend themselves against Russia

Information

In the small Estonian town of Abja-Paluoja, a large-scale evacuation exercise recently took place involving over 200 civilians, primarily women, children, and the elderly. This exercise, led by the Estonian Rescue Board and the Estonian Defense League (EDL), was a response to rising concerns about regional security, particularly fears of potential aggression from Russia. Estonia’s strategic proximity to Russia and ongoing uncertainties surrounding the conflict in Ukraine has led the government to prioritize preparedness drills like this one. These exercises allow civilians to practice essential survival skills, from first aid to fire-starting, echoing lessons learned from Ukraine. Estonians are increasingly aware of the importance of being ready for crises, as evidenced by the EDL’s growing membership and community involvement in defence initiatives.

The EDL, a volunteer-based organization, has seen a significant rise in interest since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Volunteers, including many who joined after witnessing the conflict, commit weekends to undergo training in various civil defence skills. For example, Liis Pariis, a kindergarten teacher, joined the EDL’s women’s division and now assists in organizing evacuations and providing aid. Estonian citizens are highly invested in their nation’s defence, with a majority expressing readiness to defend their country. Moreover, Estonia’s defence spending is among the highest in NATO, emphasizing its commitment to security. Through training sessions and community outreach, organizations like the EDL and the Red Cross ensure that civilians are better prepared for emergencies, fostering resilience against both military threats and natural disasters.

So what

It is unsurprising that following Russia’s invasion, groups like this have become more popular. It is likely that training such as this is not only beneficial if a war does break out but also as a deterrent, as the enemy now knows that all adults will be trained to some level.
