Israel Strikes Syrian Base Turkey Condemns It

Israel carried out airstrikes on Syria’s Abu al-Duhur airbase near Aleppo on Tuesday, hitting a facility close to the Turkish border. Syrian state media reported eight strikes and no casualties. The base sits in an area where both the Israeli and Turkish militaries are active.

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said Syria was on the verge of violating a “status quo agreed with Israel in security matters” by allowing Turkish troops to deploy at the airbase, calling it a threat Israel would not tolerate. Turkey rejected what it called “untenable allegations”, accusing Israel of pursuing expansionist and destabilising policies, and vowed to keep cooperating with Syria’s government.

Turkey has emerged as a main ally of Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, training its army and helping rebuild state institutions. US special envoy Tom Barrack called the strike an “unnecessary escalation” and said Washington is working on a deconfliction mechanism among Israel, Turkey and Syria.

So What

This is best read as two US-aligned powers colliding over who shapes post-Assad Syria. Turkey is entrenching as al-Sharaa’s patron, rebuilding the Syrian state and army. Israel views a Turkish military presence on its northern flank as a strategic threat and is signalling a red line early, before deployment hardens into fact. The election framing Turkey attributes to Netanyahu is possible but likely secondary. The more durable driver is a structural contest for influence that Washington now has to mediate between two partners. Escalation is possible but still unlikely while the US deconfliction track holds.
