Cameras on the Royal Navy’s K3 Scout surveillance drones were found transmitting “heartbeat” signals to a device in China, according to a report first published by The Telegraph. The signals reportedly confirmed only that the cameras were online and functioning, and the Ministry of Defence says a thorough investigation found no evidence that MoD data or systems were accessed, compromised or transmitted externally.
The transmissions were identified during a routine cyber vulnerability assessment. The MoD says it removed internet connectivity from the drones after discovering the traffic was reaching a Chinese IP address. The Navy has bought 20 of the Chinese-made K3s under its drone programme, Operation Beehive, and the aircraft have reportedly been used by UK special forces since March 2026. The drones were supplied by Kraken Technology Group, which sourced them from a third party.
The uncrewed systems are intended for surveillance, force protection and precision strike roles as the Navy shifts toward a “hybrid” model that leans more heavily on drones. The discovery has renewed long-standing concerns among UK officials about the security risks of Chinese-made components in Western defence equipment.

The captured traffic can likely be studied to confirm whether anything beyond an online-status ping, such as imagery or location data, was ever transferred. The broader takeaway is a timely wake-up call: foreign-made technology embedded in sensitive or classified environments is a supply-chain risk in itself, regardless of whether this particular case proves benign.
