German police say a drone carrying an explosive device was found at Leipzig/Halle Airport, a key hub for NATO military transport and Ukraine’s Antonov Airlines. An employee spotted the device overnight near parked Ukrainian cargo planes. A police robot removed the detonator, and authorities later carried out a controlled explosion.
A second unidentified object reportedly collided with a cargo aircraft near the same airport. Minor damage was found on the plane after it landed in Hanover. The northern runway reopened early Wednesday, while the southern runway stayed closed.
Saxony’s Interior Minister Armin Schuster called it a “very serious security incident”. Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev, said “Who else could it be but Russia?” Moscow has not commented. The incident follows months of unauthorised drone flights over German military bases, airports and energy sites, which police warn may have been organised by Russian agents. In July 2024, an explosive parcel ignited at the same airport, part of a wider sabotage campaign linked to Moscow.

The operation may have been a genuine attempt at sabotage, but it is also plausible that it served as a signaling or reconnaissance move, aimed at identifying weaknesses in Germany’s rear-area security without provoking a direct military response. Regardless, the low cost and deniability associated with drone operations suggest that further incidents are highly likely.
