Ukraine accused Russia of violating a unilateral ceasefire by launching a large-scale overnight assault involving more than 100 drones and three missiles, just hours before the truce was set to begin. The attacks killed at least 27 people and injured dozens across eastern Ukraine. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said the strikes demonstrated that Moscow was not interested in peace, instead intensifying hostilities despite Kyiv’s call for a halt in fighting.
Some of the deadliest attacks occurred in Zaporizhzhia, where at least 12 people were killed, as well as in Kramatorsk, Dnipro, and the Poltava region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strikes as “cynical” and “senseless,” noting that some attacks deliberately targeted rescue workers responding to earlier strikes. The violence comes amid Russia’s own planned ceasefire around its May 9 Victory Day celebrations, even as it continues ongoing bombardments, prompting Ukraine to question Moscow’s sincerity and call for genuine steps toward peace.
