Hungary held a parliamentary election on Sunday, April 13, 2026, resulting in a landslide victory for centre-right opposition leader Peter Magyar and his Tisza party. Outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a key ally of both Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, conceded defeat after 16 years in power. The result was felt well beyond Hungary’s borders, with EU leaders, Ukraine’s President Zelenskiy and Trump’s Democrat opponents all welcoming Magyar’s win. The Hungarian forint surged 2.5% to a four-year high against the euro, and the Budapest stock exchange gained almost 3%.
Magyar has promised a sweeping anti-corruption drive, including stronger judicial independence and tougher public procurement rules, with the aim of unlocking billions in EU funds that were frozen over concerns about democratic standards under Orban. He also called on Hungary’s chief prosecutor, top court heads and other officials to resign, saying public institutions had been captured by Orban loyalists over the past 16 years. Celebrations filled the streets of Budapest well into the early hours, with many residents expressing optimism about repairing Hungary’s relationship with the European Union.

Magyar’s landslide victory and two-thirds supermajority represents a positive step for the Hungarian people, giving the Tisza government the power to make historic changes, root out corruption and refocus Hungary’s place within Europe. While some critics fear a sharp ideological shift, this is unlikely given that Tisza remains a conservative party and will almost certainly retain many of Orban’s existing policies. Ultimately, the hope is that this result leads to a less corrupt Hungary, one that is less supportive of Russia and more aligned with the European Union.
