White House cuts WSJ from Scotland trip over Epstein story

Information

The White House has excluded The Wall Street Journal from the press pool accompanying former President Donald Trump on his upcoming trip to Scotland, citing “fake and defamatory conduct” following the publication of a controversial article. The report in question alleges that Trump sent a sexually suggestive birthday letter in 2003 to Jeffrey Epstein, a former associate and convicted sex offender. In response, Trump has filed a $10 billion lawsuit against the WSJ and its parent company, accusing them of causing serious damage to his reputation and finances. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that 13 media outlets would travel with the President, excluding the WSJ due to its reporting.

This decision has sparked concerns about press freedom, as the Trump administration has previously barred other outlets from coverage in retaliation for critical reporting. The White House removed press pool management from the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) earlier this year, further centralising control. WHCA President Weijia Jiang condemned the WSJ’s exclusion, warning it sets a dangerous precedent for government retaliation against the media. The WSJ, whose report included a letter allegedly signed by Trump and drawn inside the outline of a nude woman, stands by its journalism, while its parent company Dow Jones has pledged to defend itself against the lawsuit.

So What

This move is likely to be counterproductive when it comes to helping people move on from the Epstein story. One lesson we can learn is that, regardless of the true story surrounding Epstein, using it as a propaganda tool against an opponent can be a double-edged sword. When you gain power and lack answers, the same people you rallied against can quickly turn on you. Additionally, it doesn’t create a good impression to accuse other countries of censorship while engaging in it yourself.
