Ukraine says it hit Russia’s bridge to Crimea with underwater bombs

Information

Ukraine has claimed responsibility for a recent underwater bombing of the Crimean Bridge, labelling it a “unique special operation” against the key structure that connects Russian-occupied Crimea to mainland Russia. According to Ukraine’s security service (SBU), over 1,000 kilograms of explosives were attached to one of the bridge’s underwater pillars, marking the third successful strike on the bridge since Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion. Released footage showed a dramatic underwater blast and apparent structural damage, though the full extent remains uncertain.

The bridge, a strategic 19-kilometer link used by Russia for transporting troops and equipment, was briefly closed for about four hours following the attack, according to Russian state media. Ukraine has repeatedly stated that the bridge is a legitimate military target due to its crucial logistical role in the conflict. This latest strike underscores Kyiv’s continued focus on targeting Russian military infrastructure within occupied territories.

So What

While this strike is likely very symbolic of Ukraine’s continued ability to conduct effective strikes on key Russian sites, so far, the battle damage assessments appear to show minimal damage. However, there were unconfirmed reports of additional strikes that, if true, could have caused further damage. Regardless of the actual damage caused this has sent a clear message that Ukraine has the capability to conduct attacks such as these, likely causing further fear for their remaining naval ships in the black sea. It also sends a message to Ukraine’s allies that they have no intent of backing down.
