UK discloses secret settlement plan for thousands of Afghans

Information

The United Kingdom has disclosed that it secretly resettled thousands of Afghans who worked with British forces after a serious data leak in 2022 exposed their identities. Defence Minister John Healey told parliament that the breach, which involved personal information of about 19,000 Afghans applying for relocation after the Taliban’s 2021 takeover, created fears that lives were in danger. In response, the previous Conservative government launched a classified initiative known as the Afghan Response Route to protect those deemed at the highest risk of Taliban reprisals. Under this program, around 900 Afghans and 3,600 family members were either relocated to Britain or are currently in transit.

The data leak came to light only in 2023, when extracts appeared on Facebook. To mitigate the fallout, the government secured a superinjunction preventing any disclosure of the program’s existence and committed £850 million to fund the relocation effort. The secrecy continued until Tuesday, when the injunction was lifted under the new Labour government. An independent review later concluded there was little evidence that the leaked information substantially increased the risk of Taliban retribution against those affected. Nonetheless, the UK pressed ahead with the resettlement as a precautionary measure, acknowledging the gravity of the error and its potential consequences.

So What

While it may be controversial among right-leaning groups in the UK, this is likely a positive move in terms of the UK’s geopolitical reputation and international image. When it comes to conducting military operations overseas, particularly counterinsurgency-type operations, countries generally partner with local forces; for this to work, there needs to be trust. If the UK continues to support people who help them, even if they withdraw, then next time, people will likely be willing to help them out again.
