A senior Russian military official was killed in a car bombing in southern Moscow, according to Russia’s federal investigators. Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, who headed the Operational Training Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces’ General Staff, died from injuries sustained in the explosion. Russia’s Investigative Committee said it is examining multiple motives, including the possibility that Ukrainian intelligence services were involved. The Kremlin confirmed that President Vladimir Putin was promptly informed of the killing, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov addressing the matter publicly.
The attack fits a broader pattern of high-profile assassinations and bombings that Russian authorities have blamed on Ukraine since Moscow’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Previous incidents include the April killing of General Yaroslav Moskalik near Moscow, a December 2024 bombing that killed Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov and his assistant, and earlier attacks such as the 2023 St. Petersburg café bombing that killed military blogger Maxim Fomin and the 2022 car bomb that killed Daria Dugina. While Kyiv has been accused by Moscow in these cases, Ukraine has often not publicly confirmed responsibility, and the attacks have underscored growing security concerns inside Russia.
