Information
The Russian Embassy in Nigeria has strongly denied allegations that Nigerian students studying in Russia are being forced to join the Russian military in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine. This response comes after a Bloomberg report suggested Moscow was coercing foreign students, including Nigerians, into fighting alongside Russian troops in Ukraine. The embassy labeled these reports as “fake news” that could damage educational cooperation between Russia and Nigeria. In response, the Nigerian government also denied the reports, reassuring that Nigerian students in Russia face no difficulties in extending their visas.
These denials come at a time when Russia is actively seeking to bolster its military ranks, with President Vladimir Putin recently signing a decree to enlist 150,000 conscripts. Despite having a significant number of active and reserve military personnel, Russia has reportedly suffered substantial casualties in the Ukraine conflict. The UK Ministry of Defense estimates that over 465,000 Russian personnel have been killed or wounded since the invasion began in February 2022.

So what
Russia’s statement on this almost certainly cannot be trusted. It appears likely that Russia would do things such as this to boost troop numbers in Ukraine. If you look at the maps of where Russia is getting most of its troops from, they are clearly trying to use ethnic minorities as cannon fodder in their war. Russian tactics appear to have evolved into a surround and flood style, where they pin down Ukrainian forces and flood them with poorly trained soldiers, known as “Storm Z”.
