Anti-immigration protests continued across Britain on Sunday, with demonstrations outside hotels housing asylum seekers in towns including Epping, Bristol, and Birmingham. The protests follow weeks of growing tensions, heightened after a migrant in a London-area hotel was charged with sexual assault. The issue has become a political flashpoint, as Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labour government faces pressure to end the use of hotels, which costs billions annually. A recent court ruling ordered asylum seekers removed from the Epping hotel that has become a focal point of protests, though the government plans to appeal. Meanwhile, official figures show asylum claims are at record highs, with more migrants being housed in hotels compared to last year.
The unrest comes as Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party, which is leading in recent polls, pushes hardline policies including mass deportations, withdrawal from the European Convention on Human Rights, and large-scale migrant holding sites. In response, the Labour government announced reforms to accelerate asylum decisions and reduce the backlog of more than 100,000 cases. The plan includes creating an independent adjudication body to handle appeals, with the goal of phasing out hotels for migrant housing. Interior Minister Yvette Cooper said the asylum system Labour inherited was in “complete chaos” and emphasised the need to restore control and end long delays that have fueled public frustration.
