Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered his 19th annual State of the Nation address, focusing on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, or what he terms a “special military operation.” Putin praised Russia’s resilience, claiming support for the military action in Ukraine, and highlighted military advances, such as Ukraine’s withdrawal from Avdiivka. He acknowledged the round-the-clock ammunition production and thanked businesses and individuals for supporting the military. Putin accused the West of trying to weaken Russia internally, blamed them for drawing Russia into an arms race, and warned of nuclear war if NATO sent troops to Ukraine.
Putin emphasized Russia’s readiness for dialogue with the United States on strategic stability, referencing the suspended New START process. He condemned the West’s attempts to interfere in Russia’s domestic affairs and criticized Finland and Sweden’s potential NATO membership. Putin warned of nuclear conflict if NATO sent troops to Ukraine, urging Western leaders to consider historical examples and accusing them of viewing war as a “cartoon.” The address, with notable figures like former Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and Patriarch Kirill in attendance, comes ahead of the March presidential election, where Putin is expected to secure another term, despite disqualifying major opposition politicians.
The speech also follows the death of Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny, with observers awaiting Putin’s remarks on the matter. Putin’s address covered not only the Ukraine conflict but also touched on international relations and domestic issues, setting the stage for the upcoming election.

Assessment
Putin’s speech was a typical one delivered during an election, aimed at stirring up national pride and highlighting Russia’s strength and power. Additionally, he may have used this opportunity to promote his views on the war in Ukraine and internal interference. However, the speech did not provide any new information on Russian efforts, which is not surprising given Russia’s recent gains in Ukraine that they will likely try to maximize.
