Putin announces 3-day ceasefire in May

Information

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a temporary three-day ceasefire in Ukraine from May 8 to May 11, aligning with Russia’s World War II Victory Day commemorations. The Kremlin stated the ceasefire was initiated on “humanitarian considerations” and emphasized that Russia expects Ukraine to observe the truce as well, warning of a firm response to any violations. This move follows a call from U.S. President Donald Trump urging Putin to halt hostilities and negotiate an end to the ongoing conflict.

The Ukrainian government’s reaction to the unexpected ceasefire announcement was not immediately available. A similar ceasefire had been declared by the Kremlin during Easter, which led to a reduction in fighting, though both sides accused each other of multiple breaches. This latest ceasefire attempt reflects ongoing challenges in establishing lasting peace amid persistent distrust between the two countries.

So What

While it is likely that Putin wants to be seen as a peacemaker, both internationally and at home, it is highly unlikely that he intends for this peace to last. It is more likely that his intent is to simultaneously woo Trump by claiming he wants peace and blaming Ukraine for the conflict. However, it is also highly unlikely that this peace will be observed, much like the easter peace. Putin will likely use the ensuing blame game to try to put the conflict on Kyiv figuratively.
