Moldova expels Russian diplomats for aiding fugitive MP

Information

Tensions between Moldova and Russia escalated on Monday after Moldova expelled three Russian diplomats, declaring them “persona non grata” due to actions that allegedly violated their diplomatic responsibilities. This move followed accusations that the Russian Embassy in Chisinau helped pro-Kremlin lawmaker Alexander Nesterovschii evade a prison sentence. Nesterovschii, sentenced in absentia to 12 years for illegally funding a political party linked to fugitive businessman Ilan Shor, was reportedly transported to Transdniestria by the Russian Embassy. Russia’s Foreign Ministry has promised retaliatory measures, though specifics have not been provided.

Moldova’s President Maia Sandu condemned Russia’s actions as direct interference in Moldova’s judicial system, emphasizing the country’s pro-European stance and its aim to join the EU by 2030. The diplomatic rift is part of a series of clashes, including previous expulsions of Russian diplomats over spying allegations. As Moldova prepares for parliamentary elections this autumn, the government continues to crack down on illegal funding linked to pro-Russian interests, with recent detentions of political figures like Eugenia Gutul and Irinna Lozovan. The situation underscores the ongoing struggle between Moldova’s pro-European aspirations and Russian influence.

So what

It’s encouraging to see Moldova taking proactive steps ahead of the elections later this year. We’ve observed that countries that attempt to take action only after elections often face negative consequences, which can provide a significant propaganda advantage to hostile states. However, it is highly likely that Russian intelligence will be working diligently to influence the situation in Moldova, as it is crucial for their anti-EU operations. As the election approaches, we can expect tensions to escalate, with increased activities both supporting and countering Russian influence.
