Macron says France to increase its nuclear arsenal

Information

French President Emmanuel Macron announced from the L’Ile Longue military base that France will increase the number of nuclear warheads in its arsenal, citing a period of “geopolitical upheaval fraught with risk.” He described the upgrade as essential to ensuring national and European security, declaring that “whoever wants to be free must be feared” and must therefore be strong. Although Macron did not specify how many additional warheads would be added, France currently possesses around 290 nuclear warheads, making it the world’s fourth-largest nuclear power after the United States, Russia, and China. France’s nuclear capabilities include four nuclear-armed submarines with a range of about 10,000 kilometers and Rafale fighter jets capable of launching nuclear cruise missiles at a range of roughly 500 kilometers.

Macron also signaled a shift in France’s nuclear doctrine toward closer cooperation with European allies such as Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Denmark. The move comes amid growing doubts in Europe about the reliability of the US nuclear umbrella, especially following tensions with Washington earlier this year over President Donald Trump’s stance on Greenland. As concerns rise that US commitments to European security may waver, France, the EU’s only nuclear power, appears to be positioning itself as a stronger nuclear deterrent for the continent.

So What

Although the prospect of expanding nuclear arsenals is unsettling, it reflects a shifting security landscape in which the United States appears to be scaling back its traditional role as Europe’s primary nuclear guarantor, prompting countries such as France and the United Kingdom to assume greater responsibility. An increase in nuclear weapons does not necessarily signal a greater likelihood of their use; rather, it is intended to strengthen deterrence by reinforcing the credibility of a country’s defensive posture.
