Hungary is trying to circumvent US sanctions on Russian oil

Information

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced that Hungary is exploring ways to bypass new US sanctions imposed on Russian oil companies Lukoil and Rosneft. In a radio interview, Orban said he had been in talks with Hungary’s state energy company MOL about how to continue oil cooperation despite the restrictions. Hungary, which depends heavily on Russian oil, was the only EU member state that refused to support a collective pledge of financial aid to Ukraine following a recent summit, highlighting Budapest’s growing isolation within the bloc over its pro-Russia stance.

Orban, known as the Kremlin’s closest ally in the EU, has consistently resisted Western sanctions on Moscow and maintained close economic ties with Russia despite the ongoing war in Ukraine. The new US sanctions, announced by President Donald Trump, the first against Russia since his return to office in January, come amid stalled peace efforts and increasing frustration in Washington. As other Western nations tighten economic pressure on the Kremlin, Hungary’s efforts to find workarounds underscore the deep divisions within the EU over how to handle relations with Russia.

So What

While Hungary may find legal means to circumvent the newly imposed US sanctions on Russian oil companies, such actions risk provoking a strong response from President Trump. Any attempt to bypass these measures could strain relations between Washington and Budapest, potentially prompting the US to impose tariffs on Hungarian goods or take broader punitive actions against the European Union. Ultimately, Orban’s approach represents a high-stakes gamble. By choosing to defy Western pressure rather than diversify Hungary’s energy imports through alternative suppliers, he risks significant diplomatic and economic repercussions that could have been avoided through a more cooperative energy strategy.
