Information
The NYT has reported that the CIA provided highly detailed intelligence that enabled the United States and Israel to carry out a coordinated strike in Tehran that killed Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, along with several top military and security officials. US intelligence had tracked Khamenei for months, refining its understanding of his movements and communication patterns, particularly after insights gained during the previous year’s 12-day war.
When the CIA learned that Khamenei and other senior leaders would gather at a central government compound on Saturday morning, US and Israeli officials adjusted the timing of their planned attack to exploit the opportunity. Israeli fighter jets launched long-range precision missiles that struck multiple buildings in the compound, achieving what Israeli officials described as tactical surprise despite Iran’s war preparations.
The strike killed or targeted numerous senior figures, including high-ranking members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps and Iran’s defense establishment, severely damaging the country’s political-security leadership. Iran’s state news agency confirmed the deaths of at least two top military leaders, while Israeli officials claimed broader success in eliminating key figures. The operation reflected months of joint planning, close intelligence sharing, and increasingly sophisticated surveillance of Iran’s leadership network.

So What
While symbolically significant, the move appears unlikely to achieve its broader strategic objectives at this stage. There are currently minimal signs of widespread popular uprising within Iran, though that could shift if strikes expand to target the operational and tactical-level security forces responsible for domestic repression. Such an effort, however, would require a substantial and sustained expenditure of ordnance. Moreover, the apparent deprioritization of Iran’s nuclear capabilities in this latest round of strikes suggests that degrading those programs is currently a secondary objective with limited operational focus.
