German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced a significant shift in Germany’s military policy during a ceremony in Vilnius, marking the permanent deployment of a German tank brigade to Lithuania—the country’s first such overseas deployment since World War II. This move is part of NATO’s broader strategy to bolster its eastern defences in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Merz emphasized the historical and strategic significance of this deployment, describing it as a “new era” for the German military and a symbol of solidarity with Lithuania. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda echoed these sentiments, calling the moment a “landmark event” for NATO and European security.
In addition to the deployment, Merz voiced strong support for increased military spending among NATO members. Amid growing pressure, especially from the United States, to boost defence budgets, NATO is considering new spending targets of up to 5% of GDP. Merz indicated that Germany finds the proposed targets reasonable and achievable by 2032, reinforcing his commitment to modernizing the German armed forces, a key campaign pledge. Germany recently adjusted its fiscal rules to accommodate increased defence spending, while Lithuania plans to exceed the 5% mark, reflecting the heightened threat perceived by Baltic nations. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius underscored that deterrence and defence are now top Germany’s national priorities.
