Finland has summoned Russia’s ambassador following the suspected violation of Finnish airspace by two Russian military aircraft near the southern coast last week. The incident, which occurred off the coast of Porvoo, about 50 kilometres east of Helsinki, is under investigation by Finnish authorities. The Finnish foreign ministry reported the breach on Friday and emphasized the seriousness of the potential territorial violation in its communication with the Russian envoy. The ambassador was informed that Finland expects a formal explanation, with the diplomat reportedly agreeing to relay the message to Moscow.
This airspace breach comes amid growing tensions between Finland and Russia, particularly following Finland’s accession to NATO in 2023. Helsinki, which shares a lengthy 1,340-kilometer border with Russia, has repeatedly expressed concerns over increased security risks and is actively bolstering its defence capabilities. Recent satellite imagery has revealed expanded Russian military infrastructure near the Finnish border, confirming Finland’s fears of rising military activity. The Baltic Sea region has also experienced numerous infrastructure disruptions since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, prompting NATO to increase its maritime presence. In response, Finland has committed to boosting defence spending to at least 3% of GDP by 2029 and restructuring its armed forces to better address these evolving threats.

Though it is likely that this incident occurred by accident, it is also possible that this was Russia testing Finland’s reactions. This could include how effective Finnish radar coverage is, how long it takes them to scramble jets, and possibly how harsh of a reaction they have to the violation. Regardless, it is likely that Russia will call the incident and accident, and so the games continue.
