Finnish authorities seized a cargo vessel suspected of damaging an undersea telecommunications cable between Finland and Estonia after a fault was detected early Wednesday. The ship, Fitburg, was found with its anchor lowered near the damage site in Estonia’s exclusive economic zone and was ordered by Finnish border guards to move into Finnish waters. Police detained all 14 crew members and launched an investigation into aggravated criminal damage and interference with telecommunications, while Finnish President Alexander Stubb said the country was prepared to respond to evolving security challenges.
The Fitburg, sailing under the flag of St Vincent and the Grenadines, had departed from St Petersburg in Russia and was en route to Israel when it was intercepted. Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna confirmed close coordination between Finnish and Estonian authorities. The incident comes amid a broader pattern of disruptions to undersea cables and pipelines in the Baltic region since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which experts view as part of a “hybrid war.” In response to repeated incidents, NATO has increased patrols in the Baltic Sea.
