While President Trump may not publicly respond or appear concerned, such rhetoric is likely to deepen tensions behind the scenes, potentially resulting in higher tariffs or even more consequential steps such as a further drawdown of U.S. military forces in Europe. However, if Germany and its European partners truly intend to stand more independently, their stance must extend beyond strong words: it will require sustained increases in defense spending, as well as serious investment in energy resilience and supply chain security to underpin genuine strategic autonomy.
