The trial unfolded in Baymak, near Kazakhstan’s border, sparking protests lasting days. Authorities investigate protesters for “mass rioting,” with a potential 15-year prison term. Bashkortostan’s Interior Minister urged restraint, cautioning against jeopardizing lives.
The demonstration in freezing -20°C reportedly drew thousands, supporting Alsynov. Attempts to block the courthouse followed his sentence. Russian investigators claim law enforcement injuries, alleging protesters used objects as weapons. Tear gas was deployed, and protesters hurled snowballs at police.
Alsynov, accused of insulting migrants during an anti-gold mining demonstration, claims delayed retribution for preventing soda mining in a sacred location. He allegedly referred to Central Asians and Caucasians as “black people,” considered derogatory. Alsynov, maintaining innocence, argues his Bashkir language words meant “poor people,” mistranslated into Russian. He plans to appeal.
Alsynov, departing court, asserted innocence and thanked supporters. He criticized military mobilization as “genocide” against Bashkir people, a Turkic group. Once leader of banned extremist group Bashkort, focused on Bashkirs’ ethnic identity preservation, Alsynov faces heightened tensions, reflecting broader issues in the region.

Assessment
While it is unlikely that these protests will spread across Russia, as some people hope, it is a clear sign of the rise in tensions within Russia and the strain this conflict is putting on government forces. It is also likely that the protesters will be dispersed due to the cold and the heavy handed tactics of Russian police; however, this is not going to end the locals anger towards the decision.
