For many Russians, the growing relationship is seen as pragmatic, with China providing economic and industrial support while Western technology and innovation remain irreplaceable. Some view China as a temporary but powerful partner until relations with Europe and the U.S. can be restored. Meanwhile, public interest in Chinese culture is surging, evident in the popularity of Chinese language studies and the growing presence of Chinese-made cars on Russian streets. However, scepticism remains, as many Russians still associate German and Japanese products with superior quality and reliability. Overall, the partnership highlights both Russia’s dependency on China and the cautious pragmatism of its people.

The growing partnership between Russia and China appears to be one of convenience rather than deep cultural alignment, as many Russians with Slavic and European roots may feel uneasy about the shift. While the state relies heavily on Chinese trade and financing to offset Western sanctions, this dependency risks pushing Russia further into debt to Beijing. At the same time, ordinary Russians could face increased financial strain as local companies, tied to this dynamic, pass on the economic pressures to consumers.
