Although many technical details remain classified, officials have framed these technologies as essential to catching up with the United States in strategic defence competition.
The evidence also shows China continues to use restricted US technology, including Nvidia chips, while simultaneously increasing reliance on domestic alternatives like Huawei processors and DeepSeek AI systems. Procurement records suggest growing demand for DeepSeek models within the People’s Liberation Army as part of Beijing’s drive for “algorithmic sovereignty.” China is exploring futuristic applications such as drone swarms and robot dog squads, though the operational state of many projects remains unclear. Meanwhile, US officials warn that China’s AI progress directly supports military and intelligence operations, underscoring rising global concerns over an accelerating AI-driven arms race.
