The BBC reported, citing a UK government source, that lawmakers have not halted the ratification process to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. This came shortly after UK Foreign Office minister Hamish Falconer told Parliament that the process was being paused to allow discussions with US counterparts. However, the government source clarified there was “no pause,” adding that no deadline had been set and that the timing would be announced in the usual way, suggesting some confusion over the status of the treaty’s progress through Parliament.
The Chagos Islands deal, signed last year between the UK and Mauritius, aims to resolve the long-standing dispute over the archipelago’s sovereignty. Under the agreement, the UK would transfer sovereignty of the islands to Mauritius but retain control of Diego Garcia, the largest island and site of a key US military base. US President Donald Trump recently urged UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to scrap the deal, posting “DO NOT GIVE AWAY DIEGO GARCIA!” on Truth Social. Despite Trump’s remarks, the US government has formally expressed support for the UK’s decision to proceed with the agreement.
