Iran’s Revolutionary Guard reportedly struck three tankers in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, prompting the US to launch a wave of strikes against Iranian military targets, according to Reuters, Arab News and CENTCOM. US Central Command said more than 60 targets were hit, including IRGC small boats, air defense systems and coastal infrastructure across Bushehr, Kharg Island, Qeshm Island, Sirik and Bandar Abbas. The strikes reportedly also cut off Iran’s ability to openly sell crude oil on the world market.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard responded with a joint missile and drone operation targeting the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet facility at Bandar Salman in Bahrain and Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait, per Arab News. The IRGC said it also shot down a US MQ-9 drone. Air raid sirens sounded in both Bahrain and Kuwait. No deaths have been reported, though several people were reportedly injured by shrapnel in Sirik, Iran.
CENTCOM called the Iranian response “a clear and dangerous violation,” while Iranian parliament speaker Ghalibaf said “the era of bullying and extortion is over.” The clashes put a fragile 60-day ceasefire, and stalled talks in Qatar, at serious risk.

So What
This looks like Washington testing whether it wants back into open conflict with Iran, not just answering provocation. The wildcard is Congress. If lawmakers move to constrain Trump’s authority to escalate further, likely under War Powers Act pressure, the US could find itself in a genuinely weak negotiating position: little leverage, no credible ability to apply military pressure, and an emboldened Iran across the table. Watch Congress here more than the battlefield.
