Spanish Civil Guard officers raided the Madrid headquarters of the ruling Socialist Party (PSOE) on Wednesday as part of a National Court investigation into alleged illegal party financing. The Central Operative Unit (UCO) searched the party’s national offices on Calle de Ferraz in Madrid, looking for material related to alleged corruption by a former party member connected to a state-run company. A PSOE spokeswoman said the party was calm and cooperating fully with authorities.
The raid comes amid a widening series of graft allegations surrounding Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s inner circle, including his wife and brother. Former Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, a close Sanchez ally, is separately under investigation over a €53 million government bailout of the Plus Ultra airline in 2021. The investigating judge alleges Zapatero may have been part of a network of shell companies and lobbyists that pushed the bailout through government channels, with his family potentially benefitting.
Zapatero denies any wrongdoing. Sanchez, who was meeting with Pope Leo XIV in the Vatican when the raid occurred, said he sees no reason to withdraw his support for Zapatero. Opposition People’s Party leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo said the government “stinks” of corruption and renewed calls for early elections. The allegations have already prompted protests in Madrid.

So What
The raid is likely to create significant political fallout in Spain, providing opposition parties with ammunition as they enter the next news cycle. While the PP’s calls for early elections may not gain traction immediately, they become increasingly difficult to ignore with new developments. Although the PSOE is unlikely to collapse, damaging findings from the investigation could threaten Sanchez’s coalition and increase pressure on his government. Sanchez’s claim that he will not withdraw support for Zapatero could become a liability if the investigation reveals damaging information, allowing opposition parties to argue he was either complicit or negligent.
