Israel and Hezbollah exchanged fire on May 25, with Hezbollah launching a wave of explosive drones targeting northern Israeli communities. A drone struck a home in Metula near the Lebanon border, while another damaged a school bus stop in Shomera. The IDF responded with airstrikes on Tyre in southern Lebanon, issuing evacuation warnings ahead of the strikes. The IDF’s Northern Command chief stated the command is “at war” in Lebanon and that Israel “will not tolerate fire on the home front.”

The escalation is notable for the nature of the drone threat Hezbollah has deployed. The group has been using cheap, fiber-optic-guided First Person View kamikaze drones that can evade Israel’s electronic jamming systems. A senior Israeli official told Channel 12 that Israel is currently “defenseless” against this specific threat. The exchange comes despite a U.S.-mediated ceasefire that began in mid-April, which had significantly reduced hostilities, though both sides have continued trading fire throughout the truce period.

So What

Even if a ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran is agreed, it is unlikely to translate into a halt in fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. Iran’s influence over the group has reportedly diminished, and Hezbollah has developed its own drone capabilities, making it less dependent on Iranian support and therefore less responsive to Iranian pressure to stand down. This suggests that any broader diplomatic resolution in the region may not be sufficient to restore calm in northern Israel and southern Lebanon. For lasting peace in that corridor, Hezbollah would likely need to be militarily defeated.
