French President Emmanuel Macron has announced a new voluntary military service program for young French adults, set to launch by mid-2026. Aimed at strengthening national security amid rising concerns over Russia’s aggression and uncertain U.S. support for Europe, the program will be open to 18- and 19-year-olds who volunteer for a paid, 10-month service. Macron emphasised that the initiative is modelled on efforts underway in other European countries and will help boost France’s military reserves, with participation expected to grow from 3,000 in 2026 to 10,000 by 2030. He stressed that recruits will only serve within France and may transition into civilian life, join the reserves, or pursue a full military career afterwards.
The move follows warnings from France’s top military leadership about the need to prepare for future threats, though Macron rejected any suggestion of sending young French citizens to Ukraine. France’s decision aligns with a broader shift in Europe, where nations such as Germany, Belgium, and Poland are expanding voluntary service programs, and several EU countries maintain mandatory conscription. With growing geopolitical tension, European governments are working to strengthen their defence capability, rebuild reserve forces, and ensure readiness in case of conflict.
